DEKRA Certifies NXP's Latest Generation of Secure wireless MCU Against SESIP and PSA Certified Certification Schemes, Proving Conformity to EU Radio Equipment Directive
DEKRA, a global leader in testing, inspection, and certification services, has certified NXP® Semiconductor's KW45, K32W148, and MCX W71 Wireless MCUs according to SESIP Level 2 and PSA Certified Level 2 certifications and their conformity to the European Radio Equipment Directive (RED). This is the first RED certification achieved in the semiconductor industry and by a certification laboratory.
This achievement consolidates DEKRA's role as an accredited testing laboratory for SESIP and PSA Certified schemes. It also contributes to expanding its services for customers in the semiconductor industry. DEKRA is an expert in navigating the complex landscape of security requirements. The testing and certification of products and components verify that the respective cybersecurity requirements are met in a rapidly evolving market.
The Radio Equipment Directive, initially introduced in 2016, establishes manufacturing standards for radio products relating to their health and safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and efficient use of the radio spectrum. The RED has recently been updated to include additional legislation related to cybersecurity, including personal data protection, privacy and protection against fraud. From 1st August 2025, all devices capable of connecting directly or indirectly over the internet placed on the EU market must comply with the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) cybersecurity requirements.
In the context of this new regulation, NXP’s KW45, K32W148 and MCX W71 wireless MCUs, designed for car access, industrial connected devices and IoT (Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Bluetooth Low Energy) applications, met the compliance to RED article 3.3d, 3.3e and 3.3f by adhering to the technical specifications of RED standards: prEN 18031-1:2023, prEN 18031-2:2023 and prEN 18031-3:2023.
This compliance has been achieved by leveraging KW45, K32W148 and MCX W71 SESIP certifications (Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms), based on SESIP Protection Profile GPT_SPE_150 for Secure MCUs and MPUs v1.0.
“NXP has a long history of prioritizing cybersecurity excellence, and this is the newest demonstration of our security expertise and leadership,” says John Boggie, Head of Cybersecurity Certification at NXP. And, John Boggie adds: “The Attestation of Conformity on NXP wireless MCUs accelerates compliance and time-to-market for OEMs when embedding these NXP products into their devices The RED legislation incorporates the concept of modularity or composition which enables OEMs to rely on security capabilities from RED conformant chips and modules to build conformance at the end product level.”
Rubén Lirio, Global Cybersecurity Director at DEKRA, stated, “For DEKRA, this marks the beginning of a significant journey in the field of security assessments for semiconductors. It enhances our understanding of the technical landscape by providing a comprehensive view of cybersecurity requirements and their importance within the supply chains of IoT, industrial equipment, medical devices, vehicles, and more areas where we already offer cybersecurity evaluation services. We take great pride in delivering the highest level of service to NXP, especially since our lab has already achieved accreditation for the relevant chip certification schemes, which reinforces our commitment to excellence in this critical area”.
