Environment and Climate

To help ensure a sustainable future, DEKRA is committed to resource-efficient working methods and climate protection. This applies to internal procedures and processes as well as to our expert services for our customers in order to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions inside and outside the company.

We aim to minimize our negative impact on the environment while maximizing our efficiency. To this end, we analyse DEKRA‘s environmental impact, draw on the results to devise strategic and operational targets. To encourage compliance with our measurable targets, we derive performance indicators and constantly strive for improvement.

Climate Protection

The issue of greenhouse gas emissions plays a central role in our environmental management. We aim to contribute to climate protection and minimize our impact on climate change. We want to reduce emissions in the three areas of direct emissions and indirect emissions from energy purchases (Scope1 and 2) and in particular business travel activities (Scope 3). Specifically, we are working to achieve carbon neutrality on the balance sheet by 2025. To this end, we will set a science-based emissions reduction target at SBTi over the next two years to reduce as many emissions as possible and reliably offset the rest.

Ressource Management

For our activities as an expert service provider, the competence, innovative strength and experience of our employees are essential. Compared to manufacturing companies, our business activities have a relatively low environmental impact. Nevertheless, we also consume natural resources directly and indirectly for the provision of our services. Our environmental management is working globally to improve resource efficiency at DEKRA.

We are also constantly improving the energy efficiency of our buildings and promoting the generation of renewable energies at our sites. In addition, the ongoing optimisation of waste management, recycling and water usage is part of our environmental management. To improve our resource consumption beyond this, we are developing approaches for Green Office and Green IT as well as ecological procurement. In order to promote environmental protection even more actively, we initiate projects at our sites and beyond, which aim to preserve biodiversity.

RE100

In addition, DEKRA is part of the global RE100 initiative. The aim of RE100, led by "The Climate Group" in partnership with CDP, is to promote the sourcing of electricity from renewable sources. The initiative brings together a number of influential companies that have committed to procuring 100 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources.

In Germany, we have been covering 100 percent of our electricity consumption with renewable energies since 2020, thereby saving 7,750 tonnes of CO2 per year. We also want to switch our group-wide electricity procurement to 100 percent renewable electricity sources by 2025. In 2022, electricity procurement could be switched to 100 percent renewable electricity sources in 11 additional countries, for a total of 43 countries. DEKRA's expected green electricity coverage in 2022 is thus approx. 56 percent (based on data from 2021).
