Laser Testing and Classification

Laser classification according to IEC/EN 60825 for safe and compliant products

Bring Safe and Compliant Laser Products to Market

Laser technology is used in a wide range of products, from industrial equipment and medical devices to consumer products. To bring these products to market, manufacturers must demonstrate compliance with applicable safety requirements and ensure that laser products are correctly classified.
As a CB testing laboratory under the IECEE Scheme, DEKRA provides laser testing and classification services in accordance with IEC/EN 60825. Our experts support manufacturers with measurements, assessments, classification, and documentation review, helping them demonstrate compliance and move forward with confidence.

Laser Safety and Classification Requirements

Laser products must meet specific safety requirements based on their intended use, radiation characteristics, and potential hazards. Correct classification is essential for product safety, labeling, documentation, and compliance with applicable standards.
DEKRA offers laser safety assessments, classification in accordance with IEC/EN 60825, and verification of documentation and labeling to help manufacturers demonstrate compliance and prepare for market entry.

Typical applications include:

  • Industrial laser equipment

IEC/EN 60825 and Laser Classes
IEC/EN 60825-1 is the internationally recognized standard for laser safety and classification. It defines limits for accessible laser radiation and provides the framework for assessing potential hazards.
Depending on the hazard, lasers are classified into classes 1, 1M, 1C, 2, 2M, 3R, 3B, and 4, ranging from harmless under normal conditions (Class 1) to highly hazardous (Class 4), for which special protective measures are required.
Correct classification is a prerequisite for standard-compliant labeling and the safe use of laser products.
