DEKRA, Now an ISO 17025 Accredited Laboratory for Next Generation eCall Type-Approval
DEKRA has received ISO 17025 accreditation to perform conformity testing for the Next Generation eCall (NG eCall) system. This European emergency call system marks a significant advancement in the safety of connected vehicles, operating over next-generation mobile networks (4G and 5G).
Thanks to this accreditation, DEKRA is now able to offer services to support the type-approval of eCall systems in Europe and other countries using the same technical standards. This new capability further strengthens DEKRA’s position as a strategic partner for automotive manufacturers and providers of connectivity solutions.
“This accreditation reinforces our commitment to safe and connected mobility,” says Lourdes Sánchez, Director of the Connectivity Division at DEKRA Digital & Product Solutions in Málaga. “For manufacturers, having an accredited partner like DEKRA not only ensures compliance with regulatory frameworks in a timely and effective manner, but also enables them to stay ahead of technological change and accelerate time-to-market for their vehicles.”
NG eCall: The Technological Evolution of Emergency Call Systems
NG eCall represents the evolution of the traditional eCall system, which was designed to automatically alert emergency services in the event of a crash. The key difference lies in the technological infrastructure: NG eCall operates over next-generation mobile networks (4G and 5G), replacing outdated 2G and 3G systems.
The system enables the automatic transmission of a Minimum Set of Data (MSD) and initiates a voice call to the European emergency number 112. This leads to a faster and more effective response by rescue services, significantly enhancing occupant safety.
A Direct Impact on the Mobility Ecosystem
The European Commission has stipulated that, from 1 January 2026, all newly approved vehicles equipped with eCall systems must incorporate NG eCall technology. Additionally, vehicles previously certified under older technologies must be upgraded by 1 January 2027. Voluntary type-approval may begin as early as January 2025, offering a strategic opportunity for manufacturers to stay ahead of the curve.
“The rollout of NG eCall is not just a technological leap – it is a clear step forward in protecting vehicle occupants,” Sánchez adds. “Type-approval of these systems is essential to ensure interoperability, communication quality, and compliance with the highest road safety standards.”
