DEKRA experts contribute to ITC session in Geneva

High-ranking transport regulators experience V2X’s potential to avoid collisions and save lives

At the 88th annual session of the Inland Transport Committee in Geneva, Switzerland, transport regulators from around the world have had the opportunity to experience first-hand how modern technology can help avert critical situations on the road and potentially save lives. The technical demonstration by DEKRA, supported by other members of the Coalition for Cyclist Safety, showed different scenarios in which V2X communication (“vehicle to everything”) can create earlier awareness, support safer decisions and potentially prevent collisions.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s ITC is the highest decision-making body of the UN on inland transport. The 88th session is entitled “Driving Innovation for the Future of Inland Transport”. The discussions explore how innovation can be responsibly harnessed through coherent, science-based and interoperable regulatory frameworks to make inland transport safer, greener and more resilient for the future.
“Vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians are at high risk of injury or death on our roads, as all statistics show”, says Christoph Nolte, Executive Vice President of DEKRA and Head of the Service Division Vehicles. “More than half of all cyclist fatalities in the EU occur on urban roads, often involving complex intersection scenarios. V2X has the potential to make road users aware of a potentially critical situation before they would even have a chance to perceive it – which creates a whole new dimension of safety.”
What this means in real-life situations was shown in three different use cases in the demonstration: a car and a cyclist both approaching an intersection with a truck obstructing the view, a car coming up behind a slow-riding cyclist, and a car turning into a cyclist’s path.
“These are situations which occur on our roads every single day, putting lives at risk – often even with nobody involved really to blame. Our awareness is based on perception, so being made aware of critical situations in advance can make a huge difference”, says DEKRA expert Nolte. “We are grateful for the opportunity to bring our expertise on the topic to this event and inform top decision-makers.”
The Coalition for Cyclist Safety was founded in 2023 and brings together leading experts from the telecom, automotive, and tech industries, all dedicated to significantly improving road safety. By aligning efforts and resources across these critical sectors, the aim is to accelerate the widespread deployment of V2X technology. The work is centered on protecting cyclists and vulnerable road users, while actively supporting the global Vision Zero initiative to eliminate road fatalities. The DEKRA demonstration at the ITC session was supported by Coalition members Volkswagen, Bosch eBike Systems and Commsignia as well as ADP Engineering and Bulls Bikes / ZEG.
