Testing and Certification of Head Protection

Head injuries are often serious and can have considerable long-term effects. This is why wearing head protection that has been certified with regard to safety and ergonomics , which has been certified for compliance with safety and ergonomic requirements is important when working in hazardous conditions. DEKRA conducts testing and certification of head protection in accordance with the PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425

DEKRA tests and certifies equipment, according to PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 for personal protective equipment:

  • Firefighter helmets, according to EN 443, prEN 16471 and prEN 16473
  • Industry bump caps, according to EN 812

DEKRA also tests safety helmets for compliance with:

  • The technical directive for a modular system – protective helmet, two-way headset, facepiece, and breathing filter – for the police

Depending on the intended use, the following tests, among others, are also performed on artificially aged helmets:

  • Mechanical tests: Shock absorption, penetration resistance, resistance to mechanical deformation
  • Thermal tests: Resistance to radiating heat, Temperature resistance, resistance to flames (flame engulfment test)
  • Electrical properties
  • Resistance against contact with chemicals
  • Ergonomic tests: Field of vision measurement, wearing comfort
