DEKRA awarded PTI concession in Spanish region of Extremadura
Global no. 1 in vehicle inspection significantly expanding business in Spain
Apr 09, 2026- Four inspection sites in operation by mid-April
- Further expansion plans with flagship stations in provincial capitals
- Concession is valid for the coming 25 years
The global number one in vehicle inspection, DEKRA, is significantly increasing its business in Spain. After being awarded a concession for the region of Extremadura, the first four inspection stations are to be in operation by next week, including in the two provincial capitals within the region. The concession is valid for a period of 25 years.
This milestone is a key strategic step forward in expanding our presence in Spain. It reinforces our long-term commitment to providing reliable and accessible inspection services”, says Josu Otin, Head of Vehicle Inspection at DEKRA Spain.
The concession will provide new capacity in areas where long wait times and opportunities for service quality improvement have been identified. The region of Extremadura is situated in the South-West of Spain, bordering on Portugal. It has slightly over 1 million inhabitants and is characterized by its vast territory and a network of scattered municipalities.
In 2024, Extremadura recorded approximately 645,000 vehicle inspections. The regulations on roadworthiness inspections on vehicles in Spain (Inspección Técnica de Vehículos – ITV) are drawn up by the 17 regions known as Autonomous Communities. The respective markets are structured and regulated differently, so that the entry of private organizations such as DEKRA is only possible in certain regions.
In Extremadura, the regional market combines public and private-concession ITV stations. The operational model of DEKRA’s new concession is specifically designed to improve access to the service in rural areas and low-density municipalities. That is why, in addition to the four fixed stations, DEKRA will deploy a fifth inspection facility in the form of a mobile station dedicated to the inspection of agricultural vehicles. This mobile unit is designed to bring inspection services closer to rural areas, supporting the agricultural sector by reducing travel distances and improving accessibility for farmers and operators across the region.
As part of the structural development of the concession, DEKRA will also build two new high-capacity flagship stations in the provincial capitals of Cáceres and Badajoz.
DEKRA started its vehicle inspection business in Spain with the first station in Leganés near Madrid in the summer of 2022. Up to now, another seven stations have been added in the region of the national capital. “With the new concession in Extremadura, we will more or less be doubling our vehicle inspection business in Spain. This ties in with our strategy of expanding our position as the leading inspection provider in Europe”, says Christoph Nolte, Head of Service Division Vehicles at DEKRA.
From a global perspective, DEKRA is the clear market leader in vehicle inspection, performing more than 32 million inspections per year in 24 countries from the U.S. to New Zealand, from Sweden to Morocco.
