Certified Safety for E-bike Batteries

Mar 02, 2026

The current EPAC standard EN 15194 has dialed up the safety requirements for e-bike batteries. This means that manufacturers and component suppliers need detailed safety tests covering aspects such as overcharging, short circuits, thermal, mechanical, and UV resistance, and control. Testing and certification organization DEKRA will be presenting its entire service portfolio for the cycle industry – including the extensive safety and performance tests provided in DEKRA’s laboratories – at the Cyclingworld Europe trade fair in Düsseldorf from March 20 to 22, 2026.

  • Testing and certification services for cycle manufacturers and suppliers
  • Product safety seal for e-bike batteries creates trust
The high energy density of lithium ion batteries makes them efficient but also potentially dangerous during daily use and transport. E-bike batteries have to withstand extreme conditions: heat, cold, shock, vibration, moisture, and electrical stress. Manufacturers must ensure that a battery does not burn, explode, or emit toxic gases in adverse situations.
E-bike batteries cannot be sold without the corresponding certificates of conformity. At the Cyclingworld Europe 2026 trade fair in Düsseldorf, DEKRA experts will be providing information about issues such as the tightened EU requirements: The latest version of the relevant EPAC standard EN 15194 specifies that, in future, batteries must pass the detailed safety tests for lithium ion batteries contained in EN 50604-1.
In its accredited laboratories, DEKRA tests batteries and power management systems in accordance with the current standards (EN 15194, incl. EN 50604-1 and UN 38.3). Extensive documentation provides manufacturers and distributors with legal and organizational security. If the test results are positive, the next step is to acquire the DEKRA product safety seal, which is a further signal of trust for the market.
At Cyclingworld Europe 2026, DEKRA will also be showcasing its full portfolio of safety, quality, and sustainability services for the cycle industry. Visitors will gain an insight into the company’s testing and certification services – from component to system tests – for cycle manufacturers and component suppliers. The Wheel of Services will be shown for the first time, providing an overview of DEKRA’s services for the entire value chain and helping to answer questions about traffic and bike safety.
In addition, DEKRA will be presenting its damage report services for bike retailers and workshops, providing a professional assessment of accident damage, documentation of the necessary repairs, and an objective estimation of value reduction. DEKRA thus offers reliable expertise for insurance companies, workshops, and end customers.
