Common challenges across high hazard industries to develop process safety competence

Research conducted by our colleagues at DEKRA Process Safety has revealed that finding the right content, engaging the workers, and leadership support, are 3 out of the 6 common challenges to develop process safety competency.
At DEKRA Organisational Reliability, we have seen these challenges in many organizations and are focusing specifically on leadership support, workforce engagement and finding the right content in order to improve organisational safety with our ’Creating a Culture of Care’ philosophy.
Process safety events (PSEs) can devastate organizations. We are determined to raise awareness of major accident hazards and help organizations understand through education and coaching how their decision making, behaviors, and interactions with systems and processes can collectively support catastrophic event prevention. The prevention of catastrophic events is very closely linked, even dependent on leadership support, workforce engagement and finding the right content.
In a recent eBook, we addressed that changing behaviors and decision making at Control Of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Sites can prevent major accident hazards. In many of the diagnostics undertaken at COMAH sites, we have identified missing or ineffective barriers designed to guard against major incidents.
This suggests high potential of a major incident as the organization does not have the ability to prevent, detect, control, mitigate, rescue, or recover from something potentially catastrophic. This ebook discusses an approach to developing the kind of resilience and cultural support needed to operationalize COMAH plans that control the risk of major accident hazards in COMAH industry settings.
