Besides the electric motor and the control electronics, the batteries are one of the most important basic components of electric vehicles, from pedelecs to electric commercial vehicles.

These batteries need to meet special requirements for operation, as well as with regard to transport, repair, and disposal. The manufacturers of these batteries must prove that their products meet those requirements before the batteries are approved for use in vehicles. DEKRA’s location in Arnhem in the Netherlands offers all the battery pack tests required for exactly that purpose. The spectrum of battery tests is quite wide and covers all stages of production, from individual cells through to the battery modules and right up to the complete battery packs. This means that companies that build battery modules and packs can also have their finished product tested there.

The tests include, on the one hand, mechanical tests such as vibration and shock testing. Other tests are intended to simulate real-world conditions, whereby the examiner’s focus is on temperature and air pressure simulations. Another important field for testing examines the possibilities of incorrect operation: This includes charging and discharging experiments, as well as a testing of the resistance to short circuits and an examination of the possibility of a fire hazard. The tests are conducted according to the established, commonplace standards, such as ISO 12405, IEC 62660, UN 38.3 or UNECE R100, but also some additional standards.

In addition to the battery and battery pack tests already mentioned, the engineers at the Test Center also test the electrical and functional safety of all electrical components, including the motor and battery management systems, voltage converters, charging cables and plugs as well as charging points.

The Testing Center in Arnhem also offers EMC testing for automobile parts, passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
