Metallographic investigations are frequently used as part of the damage analysis.

Classic metallography comprises cutting sections through the specimen, embedding it in synthetic resin, grinding and polishing the surface grooveless. This allows the observation of very fine structures under the light-microscope with a magnification of up to 1000x.

Should this not be sufficient, larger magnifications can be achieved with the scanning electron microscope. In addition, the connected EDX system permits the microanalytical determination of material compositions of materials near the surface.

The core competence of the metallography laboratory is the investigation of most diverse metallic materials, ceramic metal compounds, hard metals and special materials with the following focus:

  • Light-microscopy examinations
  • Preparation of metallographic sections, structural examination and evaluation of all kinds of material and composite material
  • Thin section production and transmitted light microscopy
  • Classical and instrumented hardness tests
  • Determination of chemical composition of metals by means of spectral analysis or CS combustion
  • Fracture surface analysis
  • Damage analysis
  • Scanning electron microscopy with connected EDX analysis (SEM/EDX)
  • Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM)
