Candles and their raw materials

Testing the quality of raw materials and the burning properties of candles

Candles

DEKRA tests the quality of candles and their raw materials on behalf of the Quality Association for Candles, as well as for manufacturers and retail. With the "RAL Quality Mark for Candles" (www.kerzenguete.com) consumers are given the assurance that they are purchasing high quality candles from the vast range on offer.

Burning too fast or unevenly, dripping wax and the formation of soot can all be avoided by purchasing tested candles. As can the development of harmful concentrations of substances that damage the environment and your health (e.g. PAH, sulphur dioxide).

Range of services for candle testing:

  • Burning behaviour according to RAL or customer specifications
  • Raw materials analysis (paraffin, stearin, bees wax, palm oils)
  • Harmful substances emissions when burning
  • Damage analysis

Candle makers who want to label their candles with the "RAL Quality Mark for Candles" may only use raw candle materials, dyes and paints that meet strict purity and quality standards.

However, the quality mark is only issued by the Gütegemeinschaft Kerzen e.V. once you are a member of the Gütegemeinschaft Kerzen e.V. and following extensive testing. This is done at the DEKRA Laboratory for Environmental and Product Analysis.
